Spirit of the Month: Vodka

Vodka is everyone’s favorite clear Russian liquor.

There is more to vodka than meets the eye! Depending on who you believe, vodka was originally created in Russia or Poland. There is no doubt that both countries still create fantastic vodkas today. Vodka can be made from many different ingredients and true vodka lovers will stick with a style they love the most. Some of the grains and fruits used to create vodka include:

  • corn
  • rye
  • wheat
  • other grains
  • potatoes
  • beets
  • grapes

Contrary to popular belief, vodka is not tasteless & odorless. There are distinct differences between vodkas. The flavor of vodka is subtle, often like a clear grain, and if you taste enough different vodkas you will begin to pick up on the differences.

Once vodka is fermented, it goes through a distilling process. The higher end vodkas can be distilled 5x or more. The more times a vodka is distilled, the smoother it will be, although a label claiming 5x distilled is not a guarantee of great vodka. With vodka, going for the top-shelf really does indicate a higher quality of taste (and less hangover!).

Vodka has countless uses, and the rise of flavored Vodkas shows how versatile this spirit can be. In order to enjoy vodka, try a multiple kinds. Choose your favorite top-shelf vodka to keep on hand for vodka martinis and other light drinks, or for sipping straight (chilled or on the rocks is best). Then find a variety that’s perfect for Bloody Marys (like a pepper vodka), and one that will stand up to the acidity of fruit juices (a flavored vodka, or smooth mid-level vodka).

When it comes to vodka, you should be able to have fun. There is such a huge variety that the possibilities are endless. If you need guidance about what vodkas you will enjoy, or cocktail inspirations, talk to one of our knowledgeable staff members at Bill’s Package Store. At Bill’s Package store on Ft.
