Wine of the Month: Cabernet

Fall is here & wine inspired colors are all the rage in the world of fashion. Let’s take a closer look at a classic red: Cabernet!

Much like silly putty, Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most fortunate accidents. Two grapes (the red Cabernet Franc grape plant and a white Sauvignon Blanc grape) were mistakenly bred, and the beloved Cabernet Sauvignon was born. Once considered a nobody, Cabernet Sauvignon now ranks among the most popular grapes for American wine drinkers. Learn more about why people love this delicious favorite below!

1) Tannins, tannins, tannins.
While some people are not crazy for tannins, those who love Cab do not seem to mind them! This grape’s thick and durable skin means it can survive the elements outdoors. Once in the bottle, the elevated level of tannins mean that your favorite Cabernet Sauvignon can evolve nicely on your wine rack over time. While the amount of tannins may cause your mouth to feel dry, many opt to remedy this issue by always enjoying Cabernet Sauvignon with food…a win-win if you ask us!

2) Rich in color…and alcohol content.
Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its rich, deep red coloring. This wine is also known for its high alcohol content. Most Cabs tend to be over 13.5% alcohol, while some varieties can contain in excess of 15% alcohol (another great reason to enjoy this variety of wine with food!).

3) Aging gracefully.
Higher quality Cabernet Sauvignons are typically aged in oak barrels. This process generally occurs in French or American oaks and lasts 9-18 months. The process can result in a variety of complex and delectable flavors including vanilla, leather, chocolate, coffee, tobacco… & the list goes on and on!
