Let’s Talk Tequila Facts

What is Tequila? Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, which is primarily found in the area surrounding the city of Tequila and in the highlands of the western Mexican state of Jalisco. Here are some of Bill’s favorite tequila facts.

Origin

  • Tequila is named after the town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico, which is also the primary area where tequila is produced.

Agave Plant

  • Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, specifically ‘Agave tequilana Weber.’ The plant takes around 8-12 years to mature before it can be harvested for tequila production.

Types

  • There are several types of tequila, broadly categorized into two main types:
  • 100% Blue Agave Tequila: This type is made entirely from the blue agave plant and is generally considered to be of higher quality, when compared to mixto tequila.
  • Mixto Tequila: This type can be made from a blend of sugars, including at least 51% blue agave sugars, with the remainder typically being other sugars such as cane sugar. Mixto tequila is generally cheaper and less regarded in terms of quality than 100% blue agave tequila, however.

Appellation of Origin

  • Like champagne and cognac, tequila is protected by an Appellation of Origin, which means it can only be produced in certain regions of Mexico.

Popular Drinks

  • Tequila is commonly consumed neat, as a shot with lime and salt. Additionally, it can be drank in cocktails such as margaritas or Tequila Sunrises, and also palomas*.

Here is Bill’s Package Store’s all-time favorite Paloma recipe:

  • 2 oz. tequila
  • 2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
  • 2 oz. sparkling water
  • ½ oz. lime juice
  • ¼ oz. simple syrup
  • coarse salt for the rim of the glass
  • Ice

Next, salt the rim of the glass by rubbing a grapefruit wedge around the edge and then dip it onto a small plate of salt.

Afterwards, mix the tequila, grapefruit juice, sparkling water, and then the simple syrup into the glass. Finally, fill the remainder of the glass with ice. Lastly – enjoy!

Because Bill himself is such a fan of tequila, we wanted to share just a few of our favorite tequila facts. Also, always remember to enjoy tequila responsibly and appreciate its rich history and craftsmanship.
