Delicious on its own or with food, Chianti just may be the red wine you’ve been missing!
Unlike many wines named after the grapes with which they were made, Chianti is the namesake of the region from which it was born. For a wine to be a Chianti, it must be produced in the Chianti region of Italy and be made from at least 80% Sangiovese grapes (source). Most Chiantis are 100% Sangiovese, however; other varieties mix in other grapes such as Cabernet or Merlot.
Chianti is a popular dry red while that pairs well with many foods while also standing in a flavor class all its own. In fact, it is so delectable it is arguably the most popular Italian red wine in the USA! The two most common Chianti wines you will find are Chianti and Chianti Classico. Chianti Classico is considered to be more refined because the grapes in this variety are harvested from only the finest vineyards in the region.
- The rustic, earthy tones presented by Chianti wines pair well with a variety of foods such as:
- Pasta, especially with tomato-based sauces
- Pizza
- Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
- Mushroom dishes, such as chicken with mushroom sauce
- Burgers
- Grilled Fish
