Pinot Grigio is typically a light, crisp, dry white wine that has a fairly large amount of bright acidity. Most Pinot Grigios are fresh and fruity, intended to be served cold and consumed young. Although most Pinot Grigios don’t age well there are a few exceptions that will only improve with age. These wines typically have a yellow straw color with some golden overtones. You will taste a variety of fruits in a typical Pinot Grigio including: lemon-lime, apple, pear, stone fruits (peach and apricot). There are also many non-fruit aromas common in Pinot Grigio such as almond, baking spices, honeysuckle and very often a honey or smoky flavor.
Pinot Grigio is a lighter wine and is a perfect wine to pair with foods you would like to shine through and be the star of a meal. It is a light white wine which makes it a nice compliment to many foods. Pinot Grigio pairs extremely well with seafood, light pasta dishes and assorted cheese combinations (Muenster, Gruyere and Manchego). Since Pinot Grigio is fairly acidic, avoid pairing this wine with foods that have high acid contents, like citrus fruits or tomato-based recipes. It is a perfect compliment to many fresh herb and veggie options including many salads and sides that can be hard to pair with a more robust wine.
